Living Close to God by Gene Edwards

“An unspiritual believer does not easily find answers.”

The first few pages of this book were really exciting. I completely identified with the author’s struggle with spirituality. Like the author, it seems like everyone around me has a special connection with God that I just cannot find. Furthermore, whenever one groans about feeling “unspiritual,” we are usually given cliché answers that end with “read Scriptures and pray.” Not necessarily bad advice, but advice that we have already tried.

The main message of Gene Edwards’ book is this: simplify your life, find what works, and accept failure as a normal part of the journey. The book rehashes this message over and over again. I felt like I was reading the same chapter over and over again.

Though I think his message is useful, I did not really feel like this book was very useful. I think some personal stories could have livened up the pace a little bit. Perhaps more stories from his past or his friends.

The books was provided to me as part of the "Blogging for Books" program by WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing. "This program was designed for one purpose: Give out free books to bloggers in exchange for an honest review."
