Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen

Life of the Beloved is a concise guide to talking about the heart of Christianity without using the Bible or cliché Christian talk. In church today, we use the words of Christ so often that we have become immune to their power, and outsiders treat us like we are using a foreign language. Words that do not influence the church body or the non-church goers benefit no one.

Though this book is directed towards non-believers, Nouwen does mention that this book is probably a better tool for believers that have simply lost sight of the powerful message: we are totally loved by God.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Aren't you, like me, hoping that some person, thing, or event will come along to give you that final feeling of inner well-being you desire?" (35)

"Becoming the Beloved means letting the truth of our Belovedness become enfleshed in everything we think, say, or do." (45)

"The deep truth is that our human suffering need not be an obstacle to the joy and peace we so desire, but can become, instead, the means to it." (95)
